Abstract
This chapter covers the origin of Osteichthyes and the radiation of actinoptergians. It details the key differences between actinopterygians and sarcopterygians before turning to actinopterygian evolution, diversity, swimming, reproduction, and ecology. After the industrial world brought increasing destruction and pollution of resources, different groups of bony fishes face different anthropogenic threats and require different conservation solutions. The chapter explores the impact and specializations of actinopterygians for life in Earth's waters from small, still freshwater ponds to coral reefs and deep ocean habitats. It cites how scuba, crewed submersibles, and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) have helped expand the understanding of marine teleosts living in remote and previously inaccessible environments.
