Abstract

This chapter looks into dietary considerations for sport and exercise. It clarifies that nutrition is a key factor in determining physical well-being and exercise performance capacity to ensure athletes have reached limits in training volume and intensity. Clear-cut nutritional counselling is often difficult due to the lack of generally accepted nutritional recommendations for recreational athletes and available information about differences. The chapter explains that most countries have recommended nutrient intakes (RNIs) or recommended daily allowances (RDAs) for nutrients for different age groups and genders. It explores the practical use of nutritional supplements before considering the facts and fiction relating to the use of nutraceuticals as ergogenic aids.
